Painting A Sketch

Photoshop Tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to digitally paint a sketch or drawing, using Adobe Photoshop CS5.

STEP 1

Find a sketch that you would like to paint

Before:

STEP 2

We need to select the “Mixer Brush Tool” we are going to be using this for most of this tutorial, so you will be getting used to some of the settings we have to change to get our desired effect.

STEP 3

This is the settings bar at the top of the screen for the Mixer Brush Tool. So firstly I want to use “Dry, Light Load” from the drop down menu and I have chosen one of the many rough skin colours that I would like to use.

STEP 4

So before we start to paint we need to do a few things. Firstly we need to make a new layer ( Shift+Ctrl+N ) or click on the new layer tab at the bottom of the layers menu on the right hand side at the bottom.
Next we need to put the new layer at the top of the pile, so its about the sketch layer.
After that we need to change to Opacity to something around the 61% mark, you change try other amounts if you’d like.

STEP 5

So now we can paint the base layer of the face, like you can see below I have picked a base skin tone.

STEP 6

So now we need to choose another skin tone, and as you can see I have “Shaded” areas of the face to make them darker, and you can see below I have picked a much darker tone to do this.

STEP 7

So now we have done the face with a base and some shading we can move onto another section. I moved onto the hair. Now you can choose and hair colour you like, but I went for Brunette , and again started with a base layer and painted roughly where the hair is. Pay more attention when it comes to the eyebrows and strands of hair dropping down the face. After I did the base layer I picked another shade of brown and went over it again in little areas to give it some tone, you will see this in the finished image.

STEP 8

So now we are going to change the Mixer Brush Tool settings a little and we are going to choose “Very Wet, Light Mix” from the drop down menu at the top of the screen.

STEP 9

The next section to do is the lips. We need to choose a nice natural shade for the lips. I have picked a nice red colour, but again you can change this to something else if you’d prefer.

STEP 10

So take your time and paint the lips, make sure you don’t go over the lines, above all take your time …

STEP 11

And the same goes for eye colour, same as the lips take your time …

STEP 12

One of the last steps is to change the layer setting of the layer you have been painting on, and change it to “Multiply” from “Normal”. This gives the image a much better blend to the sketch below the layer.
